There is an important concept associated with spiritual practice that tends to be overlooked when it comes to examining basic elements of Wiccan practice, such as sabbats. That concept is evolution. Slavish adherence to the basic associations of each sabbat listed in beginner books misses the point. It is important to allow your personal connection to the sabbat to influence how you commemorate it, both in everyday life and within a ritual context.

One of the keys to developing and deepening your practice of Wicca lies in a dynamic recognition of and interaction with the natural cycles. Harmony not only means that your personal energy matches that of the cycles of the world around you; it also means that your own personal energy has been enriched in some way. This is most effectively accomplished when that dynamic interaction between the cycles takes place. Observing is one method of learning; internalizing and then applying your new insight in a practical fashion further develops that knowledge into wisdom.

Additionally, seek inspiration in the culture of the pantheon you work with. To take other festivals and simply plug them into the places on the modern Wheel of the Year can diminish both systems. But there is no reason why you cannot honor additional holy days, or thoughtfully employ themes sacred to another culture in addition to those associated with the modern Wheel of the Year. Incorporating old folk traditions into the ritual expressions of modern Wicca is a wonderful way to honor the past, as long as you remember that what you are doing is a modern interpretation of something that may have happened in a similar fashion once upon a time. As long as the tradition makes sense to you in your perception of the sabbat, and functions consistently with the rest of your seasonal perceptions (both within that sabbat and the overall sabbat cycle), there is no reason for you not to include a cultural tradition in your sabbat celebration. The possibility that the ancients did not celebrate the equinoxes has no bearing on how valid they may or may not be today. Use your discretion, and do what feels right to you.
